Standard Experience - £345
Our standard experience day gives you the opportunity to
have a complete round trip over the full length of our line
with a steam engine. You will alternate between driving and
firing, spending 5 miles doing each.
You will learn about the workings of the engine and the operation
of our railway under the guidance of our fully qualified crew
and experience the thrill of footplate life.
The journeys will cover the full length of our picturesque
line, through coastal, wood and heathland scenery, taking
in our stations at Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt.
This package is offered on several dates throughout the year
and we take six participants a day. Each participant may bring
up to six guests.
The morning session begins at Weybourne at 07.30, where participants
will help to prepare the engine for the day. When steam has
been built up there will be a short break for refreshments,
before the first two participants rejoin the crew on the footplate
for a full round trip. Meanwhile the other participants will
be given a guided tour of the Engine and Carriage Sheds or
travel behind in the support coach. After the first trip,
the groups will swap over so that the next couple has an opportunity
to drive and fire. At 12.30, there will be time for lunch.
The afternoon session starts at Weybourne at 13.30, where
the remaining participants go on the footplate. The day will
end with helping to dispose of the engine.
Helping to prepare and dispose the locomotive is optional.
Participants are welcome to take part in as much or as little
as they like throughout the day, although you will each get
only one round trip on the footplate.
Each participant receives a certificate of attendance. Early
booking is advised as we only have a limited number of places
each year and they have previously been booked up early. Booking
details are at the bottom of this page.
These are not courses and there is no examination. You
just enjoy yourself!
Diesel Experience - £245
Our Driver Experience days are not only limited to steam
enthusiasts. We cater for diesel fans as well. The railway
operates several main line locomotives including a Class 25,
Class 31, Class 37 and a Class 47, as well as a DMU. These
form an integral part of the railway's operations and are
available for use on experience days. Experience a wide range
of duties from acting as second man right up to driving the
locomotive.
Spaces for Diesel Driver Experiences are limited, so again
early booking is recommended.
