The North Norfolk Railway were the runner-up for the "Best
Norfolk Attraction" award.
In the race for the Berry Savory Best Norfolk Attraction
Award, top prize in the EDP Tourism Awards, the Poppy Line
was pipped at the post by Banham Zoo, a member of the three-attraction
Goymour Group whose Dinosaur Park is a previous winner of
the award.
The judges' citation for the Poppy Line said: "North
Norfolk Railway has raised its game
their programme
has been substantially developed to target a range of audiences."
The result is a well-deserved tribute to the unpaid volunteers
who run the Poppy Line: over 90% of the jobs on the railway,
from engine driver to station staff, are handled by a 400-strong
roster of volunteers. By the end of the year, the line will
have carried some 130,000 passengers since February.
28 October 2007
The North Norfolk Railway (Poppy Line) has been chosen as
one of the three finalists for the prestigious Berry Savory
Award for Best Attraction in Norfolk. This is the top category
in the annual EDP Norfolk Tourism Awards. Our competitors
are Banham Zoo and Go Ape! Thetford Forest.
The winner will be announced at a dinner in Norwich on 22nd
November.
This years awards attracted more than 300 entries.
Congratulations to all our volunteers and staff whose performance
really impressed a very demanding panel of judges on their
inspection visit on 14th September (in the middle of preparations
for the 1940s Weekend!).

10 October 2007
After a long absence from the North Norfolk Railway, the
M&GN
Society's unique LNER Quad-Art
set is now starting to return. The four articulated vehicles
have been undergoing an extensive restoration at Carnforth.
Two of the vehicles, the two Sheringham-end coaches, have
had the major work completed and have returned to the NNR.
The other two coaches are expected to follow by February 2008
at the latest, after which finishing touches will be applied
and testing and checking of the entire set will commence.
The first two coaches returned on Monday 8 October at around
12.15. The afternoon was spent unloading them and coupling
them together. As the carriages share common bogies, the Holt-end
carriage made use of an accommodation (temporary) bogie to
enable it to be moved. At around 17.15 the coaches were slowly
propelled towards the new carriage sheds at Holt.
Unfortunately problems were encountered with the temporary
bogie and after a three hour journey to Weybourne, the coaches
were left there overnight. The next day the wheelset was replaced
with one of our own accommodation bogies and the "Bi-Art"
set was taken to bridge road carriage sheds this morning,
eventually arriving 45 hours after arriving at Sheringham
by road.
The pictures below show the first part of the journey on
Monday afternoon and evening and are copyright Steve Allen.
Top left: The first of the returning coaches is unloaded
from the low-loader at Sheringham. This is one of the centre
vehicles.
Top right: The two assembled coaches are prepared for
their journey to Weybourne and Holt.
Bottom left: The sun is setting on the coaches as the
train waits for remedial work to be carried out on the wheelset.
The problem was caused by the temporary wheels (closest to
the camera) running hot.
Bottom right: The special train continues on at 2 or 3
miles an hour, being supervised and re-greased all the way
to Weybourne. The fading daylight is evident in this photograph.
Meanwhile in the locomotive department, Battle
of Britain 4-6-2 34081 92 Squadron has returned
to its own identity after a period masquerading as classmate
34057 Biggin Hill. The engine is shortly to be leaving
for the Bluebell
Railway on loan.
Also J15 0-6-0
65462 has been having its retube completed. This engine
will also be leaving the NNR soon, destined for the Gloucestershire
Warwickshire Railway, where it will remain until early
next year.

the engine are repaired in time for the event it has been
decided to postpone the renumbering until the Steam
Gala at the end of August.
There are still places available on the charity Cheese &
Wine train. Click here

are some photographs of the current visiting engine, 56xx
0-6-2T 6619. The image on the right was taken from inside
the new carriage sheds at bridge road and clearly shows one
road is already in use. On Sunday 29 April the engine double
headed one trip from Weybourne to Sheringham with resident
J15 0-6-0 65462. The latter locomotive was being moved to
Sheringham in preparation for its departure by road to the
Kent & East Sussex Railway, where it will feature in their
"Colonel Stephens' Gala". Thanks to Bryan Toovey
for providing the photographs.

weeks, as shown in these photographs. Thanks to Steve Allen
and Len Casey for providing them.
10 April 2007
Battle
of Britain 34081 92 Squadron today passed its steam
test after prolonged firebox repairs. The Battle of Britain
Locomotive Society's unrebuilt 4-6-2 pacific moved under its
own steam for the first time in over a year as it travelled
on a light engine test run to Sheringham and back to Weybourne.
This engine is the second to leave Weybourne sheds in a month
after a long period of repairs, the first being the M&GN
Society's B12 61572,
pictured below right with 92 Squadron.
These photographs show the quality of the new paintwork in
the darker British Railways Brunswick green - you can even
see the reflection of Weybourne signal box! Click on the images
for larger versions. Thank you to Ben Fraser and Ian Bowskill
for supplying the images.
92 Squadron is due to enter public service tomorrow for a
few days before going on loan for a week to the Llangollen
Railway for the "Steel, Steam & Stars" gala.
Also we have a new feature on the website. Time-lapse movies
of our webcams are now available for the past 7 days, not
just the previous day. Click here

2 April 2007
The North Norfolk Railway has announced
its visiting engine for the summer of 2007 is 9F 2-10-0 92203
Black Prince.
The locomotive was built in 1954 to haul heavy freight trains
but has also spent time during its working life hauling passenger
trains.
92203 is private owned by David Shepherd and is normally
based on the Gloucester & Warwickshire Railway. It will
arrive at the NNR on 13th August and will depart immediately
after our Steam Gala,
at the beginning of September.
Thank you to Steve Williams and Darin Fryatt for the two
photographs of 92203 above. There are more excellent photographs
of the locomotive on the Gloucester
& Warwickshire Railway's website.
26 March 2007
Two further Sunday Lunch trains have now been scheduled,
in addition to the Cheese
& Wine train. These will operate on 17 June and 8
July 2007. Visit the dining
train page for details.
19 March 2007
On 18 March 2007, the B12 re-entered public service after
overhaul. It spent most of the day hauling a 5 coach train.
One service hauled was the Mothers' Day Sunday Lunch special.
14 March 2007
For
the first time in well over a year, B12 4-6-0 61572 moved
under its own steam today. The locomotive left Weybourne yard
and travelled along the line as part of its steam test after
having a "bottom-end" overhaul. These pictures show
the engine gleaming in its newly applied plain black livery
with British Railways early emblem (complete with comical
smiley face drawn in chalk on the smokebox). The cab-side
numbers have yet to be applied.

We are please to announce the relaunch of our online shop
for 2007. Tickets for standard
service days, the Steam
Gala, 1940s Weekend
and our 2007 Santa Specials
and Carol Concert
can now be purchased by clicking here.
In addition you can purchase Driver
Experience packages and a range of books,
DVDs
and souvenirs.
New for this year are a number of limited edition Dapol "00"
gauge model
railway wagons.
On
the railway itself, progress is continuing at Holt, both on
the new carriage
sheds and on the new museum shelter. Two more images of
the carriage sheds can be found here,
whilst the image on the right shows the fitting of the side
to the shelter.
Meanwhile at Weybourne work is progressing in the engine
and carriage sheds. The B12 passed its boiler test recently
and a steam test is planned for the near future. Once this
has been passed the engine will be given a few finishing touches
and a full repaint before returning to service. The N7 is
currently having repairs carried out to its connecting rod
and inside motion.
Next door in the carriage & wagon works, the overhaul
continues on Tourist Second Open E4843. Currently the coach
is inside the shed without any bogies, as the wheelsets are
being changed for ones without "flats". Also long-term
restoration project, Restaurant Buffet E1969 is in the process
of having the end gangway connections installed, as can be
seen in the image below right.
13 February 2007
Four further images have been published on the bridge
road carriage sheds page, showing progress with the construction
of the roofs and sides.
Meanwhile at Holt station, the goods shed is currently having
a "lean to" shelter fitted on the landward side.
This will allow a small carriage such as the pigeon van to
be displayed as part of the museum when not in service, whilst
receiving some protection from the elements. The two images
below show construction so far. Click on them for larger versions.
2 February 2007
Progress is being made rapidly on erecting the two new carriage
sheds near bridge 299. Click here

weekend are now online, including the special timetable.
29 January 2007
The railway is now operating every weekend until the end
of November, with a variety of steam and diesel services.
See the timetable
for details.
Our 2007 Thomas weekend
will take place on 10 - 12 February and then a standard steam
service will operate daily until 18 February, over the half
term week. Further details of our Thomas weekend are now available
online.
3 January 2007
November and December have been very busy months for the
railway. During November further clearance of lineside vegetation
took place near Kelling Heath Halt. This, together with similar
work last year, has opened up the fabulous view down to Weybourne
village once again.
December saw our popular Santa Specials running. Once again
a record number of passengers were carried during this period.
After Christmas the Mince Pie Specials took over, followed
by our Winter Mini-Gala over the New Year weekend.
A variety of steam and diesel locomotives hauled services
over these two months, including visiting USA 2-8-0 5197.
This locomotive has now returned to the Churnet Valley Railway.
Also on the locomotive front, Class 47 diesel 47367 has made
several test runs on the line. Although now in running condition,
this locomotive is not able to haul any passenger trains until
the fitting of vacuum brakes has been completed.
B12 4-6-0 61572 has resided in Weybourne yard for the last
year, without its wheels, whilst work was undertaken on the
axleboxes and motion. Just before Christmas this locomotive
was re-wheeled and shunted into the sheds to allow reassembly
to take place inside. Hopefully this engine will return to
service in time for the main season, along with BoB 4-6-2
34081 92 Squadron, which has received attention to its firebox,
amongst other things.
WD Austerity 2-10-0 90775 was withdrawn from service in October
with leaking stays. Work to replace these will commence shortly
and hopefully this well liked engine will return to public
service around Easter.
Next door in the carriage sheds, work has continued on TSO
M4843 and RBR M1969. A major achievement in the last month
has been the fitting of brand new bogies to the Wisbech &
Upwell coach. Now work can commence with the fitting of brake
gear, couplings and buffers.
Work on the new carriage storage sheds near Holt have now
started in earnest. The site has been leveled, concrete has
been poured and the steel framework will be delivered in the
next few weeks. A selection of track panels have been delivered
to the railway for use in the new carriage sidings. These
are some of the panels from the Norwich to Sheringham 'Bittern
Line' that have recently been replaced by Network Rail. The
panels are in store, awaiting construction of the sheds, after
which they will be transported to the site and installed.
This project should be completed in time for the return of
the Quad-Art coaches later in 2007.
The railway has now ceased operations
until 3 February. During this period all three stations will
be closed. Although Sheringham buffet and shop are normally
open regardless of whether trains are running, during January
they will be closed to allow a programme of maintenance to
be carried out prior to the 2007 season.
The office at Sheringham station (01263 820800) will be open
for enquiries on some weekdays only during January.
The online shop has also been closed for restocking. It will
reopen later in the year with a selection of products available.
