The railway's headquarters, is more than just a station. There
is a museum signal box, souvenir
shop and a buffet, as well as an attractive booking hall
and a ladies' waiting room. The station is ideally situated
for you to take a stroll through the town and walk along the
promenade before joining your train.
Location
From the A148 take the A1082. There is a brown tourist sign at the junction.
We are next to the large car park by the roundabout. The station is situated
in the centre of Sheringham, a thriving fishing town. The station has been the
location for many films and is frequently chosen by artists.

There is a large Council Pay and Display
car park immediately opposite the station. The Eastern Counties services
X50 and 44 pass the door of the station.
We are only 100 yards from the other Sheringham station which
is served by National
Express East Anglia. You may claim a 10% discount on presentation
of a valid National Express rail ticket, except on special
events.

There is souvenir
shop, with a wide range of railway books, videos, souvenirs
and postcards, together with a buffet on platform 1. On the
same platform you will find a waiting room, with a coal fire
during the colder months. There are museum displays in the
waiting room at various times throughout the year.
On platform 2 is the museum signal box which controlled the
level crossing at Sheringham, prior to its removal. There
are levers to pull and a short history of the box may be found
inside.
The wooden-bodied carriage on platform 3 houses a "hands-on"
childrens' activity area, aimed at introducing younger visitors
to the railway and explaining how things work.
A water tower, in the M&GN style, has been built just
past the bridge, on your left as you leave the station. There
is also a replica water crane at the end of platform 2.

Future Plans
There is an active investigation being undertaken into the
possibility of reinstating the level crossing. Network
Rail have agreed in principle to an "occasional use"
crossing which would allow charter trains or visiting engines
to access the NNR up to around 10 times a year.
There may also be a second water crane at the east end of
platform 1.
History
The station opened on 16th June 1887 and was extended in
1896. It was the built in the 'classic' E&M pavilion style.
The current station building, externally, is broadly similar
to the extended station although the where the buffet now
is there was a parcels office and an open space under the
overall canopy. The canopy has recently been faithfully restored
in its original style.
On platform 2 there was up waiting room built in a similar
style with a canopy over. We hope to restore this in due course.
The museum signal box now located on platform 2 originally
controlled the level crossing and was sited just by the crossing.
The current signal box, used by the railway, is about 400
yards from the station on the north side of the line. Although
not the original 'box, (it came from Wensum Junction), it
is situated on the site of the original 'Sheringham West'
signal box.
