The Norfolk Lights Express

15 November 2021 – 3 January 2022

What is The Norfolk Lights Express?

The Norfolk Lights Express is an immersive, wintertime experience that is fun for the whole family! Arrive after dark at Sheringham Station and you’ll be greeted by the magical sight of a steam-hauled train illuminated by thousands of tiny lights. The Old Luggage Office buffet will be open for you to purchase hot soup, hot drinks, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, delicious homemade cakes and savoury refreshments.

Since its debut in 2019, The Norfolk Lights Express has become firmly established as a favourite seasonal treat.  As your train steams from Sheringham to Holt and back, you’ll pass a series of colourful lit-up dioramas and literally see the countryside adjoining the track in a whole new light as the onboard lights shine on to the scenery in a series of changing colours.

When do the trains run?

The Norfolk Lights Express will be operating daily from 15 November 2021 until 3 January 2022, with the exception of 6, 24, 25 and 26 December.

On most days, trains will depart at 17:30 and 19:30. However, at most weekends, and between 19 and 23 December, there will only be trains at 19:30; while on New Year’s Eve, there will only be one departure at 17:30. Our booking system will show what is available for any given day.

How much does The Norfolk Lights Express cost?

Fares are £18 per person and advance booking is essential.

Under 3s travel free of charge providing they do not occupy a seat – the safest place for little ones is for them to sit on the lap of one of their parents.  As there are only limited seats on each train, we are not able to offer discounts or concessions on Norfolk Lights Express trains.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the experience last?
Overall, the experience lasts for around an hour and 10 minutes from leaving Sheringham to arriving back. However there will be lots of fun things to see and do at Sheringham Station, so we suggest arriving early!

Are there toilets on the train?
There are a limited number of toilets on board the train, but the inside of the train is dim so passengers can enjoy the illuminations. Therefore, we recommend you use the toilets at the stations instead – there will be time to alight at Holt before the train starts the return journey.

Will refreshments be available?
We will have a range of refreshments available at Sheringham for you to enjoy!

Can wheelchair users board the trains?
Yes. Each service will have a compartment for a wheelchair-user and their party – please call our booking team on 01263 820800 to book and reserve.

Can I bring my dog with me?
The trains are likely to be full, there are lighting effects and they won’t have much to see or do as they are not allowed on the seats so dog tickets cannot be purchased for the Norfolk Lights Express.

What happens if the weather is bad?
The trains are warm (heated by spare steam from the engine!), dry and able to operate in almost all weather conditions.

Do I need to wear a face covering?
Current Government guidance is that face coverings are not mandatory on board trains, but passengers may wish to consider wearing one. Should this change, we will update all passengers closer to the time of departure.
