What is The Norfolk Lights Express?
The Norfolk Lights Express is an immersive, wintertime experience that is fun for the whole family! Arrive after dark at Sheringham Station and you’ll be greeted by the magical sight of a steam-hauled train illuminated by thousands of tiny lights. The Old Luggage Office buffet will be open for you to purchase hot soup, hot drinks, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, delicious homemade cakes and savoury refreshments.
Since its debut in 2019, The Norfolk Lights Express has become firmly established as a favourite seasonal treat. As your train steams from Sheringham to Holt and back, you’ll pass a series of colourful lit-up dioramas and literally see the countryside adjoining the track in a whole new light as the onboard lights shine on to the scenery in a series of changing colours.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the experience last?
Overall, the experience lasts for around an hour and 20 minutes from leaving Sheringham to arriving back. However the Old Luggage Office Buffet at Sheringham Station will be open before departure and you should also allow time to check in and find your seats, so we suggest arriving early!
Which trains still have availability?
Our bookings system updates availability in real time – if your chosen date and time is full, a message asking you to select a different train will display.
An indication of current availability is shown below but this information does not update automatically and bookings are being processed all the time – tickets should be booked online in advance. Advance bookings close at midnight – to book tickets for travel the same day, please call 01263 820800 (Option 4 then 1) – please check availability below before calling.
Can I add to my booking and have the whole group sit together?
Each passenger is allocated a seat, so if you are adding to your booking please call 01263 820800 (Option 4 then 1) and advise the booking team and they will ensure that you are seated together if at all possible. It is not possible to add tickets on trains that are fully booked.
Do I need to wear a face covering?
Yes, current Government regulations require face coverings to be worn on trains and in indoor visitor facilities on the railway.
Will refreshments be available?
We will have a range of refreshments available at Sheringham for you to enjoy!
Are there toilets on the train?
There are a limited number of toilets on board the train, but the inside of the train is dim so passengers can enjoy the illuminations. Therefore, we recommend you use the toilets at the stations instead – there will be time to alight at Holt before the train starts the return journey.
Can wheelchair users board the trains?
Yes. Each service will have a compartment for a wheelchair-user and their party – please call our booking team on 01263 820800 to book and reserve.
Can I bring my dog with me?
No; The trains are likely to be full, there are lighting effects and they won’t have much to see or do as they are not allowed on the seats so dog tickets cannot be purchased for the Norfolk Lights Express.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The trains are warm (heated by spare steam from the engine!), dry and able to operate in almost all weather conditions.
