What is The Norfolk Lights Express?
The Norfolk Lights Express is an immersive, wintertime experience that is fun for the whole family! Arrive after dark at Sheringham Station and you’ll be greeted by the magical sight of a steam-hauled train illuminated by thousands of tiny lights.
The Old Luggage buffet will be open for you to purchase hot soup, hot drinks, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, delicious homemade cakes and savoury refreshments. A licensed bar will also be on board each train and can be visited before departure and during the intermission.
Since its debut in 2019, The Norfolk Lights Express has become firmly established as a favourite seasonal treat. As your train steams from Sheringham to Holt and back, you will literally see the countryside adjoining the track in a whole new light as the onboard lights shine on to the scenery in a series of changing colours. During the 5½ mile journey to Holt you’ll pass around 10 colourful lit-up dioramas on the lineside or dramatically set in the woods adjoining the track. These create an intriguing story which is brought to life by the on-board narration and music.
Where does the Norfolk Lights Express Go?
The Norfolk Lights Express departs from Sheringham and steams its way up the line of the North Norfolk Railway to Holt. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful lineside displays that tell a unique tale, and the on-train lighting will shine on to the stunning North Norfolk countryside – making it look like you’ve never seen it before!
Your journey will break with an intermission at Holt, giving you the option to hop off and take photographs with the train or to visit the onboard bar.
The historic locomotive will then switch ends ready to return you to Sheringham. On the way back, Part 2 of the show provides the opportunity to enjoy the lineside displays one more time with the on-board soundtrack complete with some seasonal music adding to the spectacle.
When do the trains run?
The Norfolk Lights Express will be operate on the days shown. The letters and colours indicate the fares applicable to each train (see below).
Departures from Sheringham are at 5.00pm and 7.30pm on each day – except on New Year’s Eve, when the Norfolk Lights Express will run at 5.00pm only.
How much does The Norfolk Lights Express cost?
Fares range between £22.50 and £30.00 per person depending on the date of travel. A limited number of private compartments for up to 6 people are available on each train – these range from £150.00 to £210.00 per compartment.

Under 3s travel free of charge providing they do not occupy a seat – the safest place for little ones is for them to sit on the lap of one of their parents. Our Santa Special Steam Trains are recommended for families with young children. As there are only limited seats on each train, we are not able to offer discounts or concessions on Norfolk Lights Express trains.
Seats are set out in blocks of four; please note that if your party does not fill the table it is likely that you will be seated with another party.
